Throughout life, we become many different versions of ourselves. Some are created through love, others through pain, survival, or the expectations of the world around us. But just because a version of you once existed doesn’t mean you have to carry it forever.
Sometimes, we hold on to old identities simply because they’re familiar. We define ourselves by past mistakes, relationships, experiences, or beliefs that no longer reflect who we are today. Without realizing it, we allow yesterday’s version of ourselves to make decisions for the person we’re becoming.
Growth doesn’t require you to reject your past. It requires you to recognize when you’ve outgrown it.
Think of a tree shedding its leaves. It doesn’t question whether those leaves once served a purpose. It simply releases them when their season has ended, making room for something new.
You can appreciate who you were without remaining that person. You can acknowledge your mistakes without making them your identity. You can honor your experiences without allowing them to define your future.
You are not obligated to remain who you had to be in order to survive.
Give yourself permission to evolve, even when it feels unfamiliar. The person you were helped bring you here, but the person you’re becoming deserves room to grow.
Remember, you are not abandoning yourself by changing. Sometimes, letting go of who you were is how you finally make space for who you truly are.
