Life has a strange way of convincing us that certain moments will last forever. When we’re experiencing pain, uncertainty, or hardship, it can feel as though the weight of everything will never lift. We become so consumed by what we’re going through that we forget something life has continuously shown us: nothing remains the same forever.
Think back to a time when you genuinely believed you wouldn’t make it through something. Maybe life took an unexpected turn, something important fell apart, or you found yourself in a place you never imagined being. At the time, it may have felt impossible to see beyond what was happening.
Yet here you are.
Somehow, through all the uncertainty, you continued moving forward. Perhaps not in the way you expected, and perhaps not without carrying a few scars, but you made it through moments you once thought would break you.
And there’s something beautiful about recognizing that.
The Illusion of Permanence
One of the greatest challenges we face as human beings is our tendency to treat temporary experiences as permanent realities.
When we’re happy, we want the moment to last. When we’re suffering, we fear that the feeling will never end. Our minds become attached to what is happening right now, forgetting that life is constantly changing beneath our feet.
In Buddhist philosophy, this understanding is known as anicca, or impermanence. It teaches that everything in existence is subject to change, from the world around us to the thoughts and emotions within us.
Nothing stays exactly as it is.
This realization can initially feel uncomfortable. After all, impermanence means that even the things we cherish cannot remain unchanged. But within that same truth exists an extraordinary sense of freedom.
If nothing lasts forever, neither does the darkness we sometimes find ourselves walking through.
Growth Doesn’t Always Feel Like Growth
We often imagine personal growth as something inspiring, peaceful, or uplifting. But sometimes growth looks like confusion. Sometimes it means waking up without answers, questioning everything you thought you understood, or simply finding the strength to get through another day.
Not every difficult experience arrives with an obvious lesson. Some things hurt without offering immediate meaning, and we don’t need to romanticize suffering to recognize our ability to move beyond it.
Growth can happen quietly.
It happens when something that once overwhelmed you no longer controls your entire day. When you begin responding differently to situations that previously consumed your thoughts. When you discover that you can experience discomfort without allowing it to define your existence.
These changes may seem insignificant while they’re happening, but over time, they reveal just how much you’ve evolved.
Learning to Trust the Unknown
Much of our suffering comes from wanting certainty about things we cannot control. We want to know when circumstances will improve, how everything will unfold, and whether the decisions we’re making will lead us somewhere meaningful.
But life rarely offers those guarantees.
What we can learn, however, is to develop trust in our ability to meet whatever comes next.
Trust doesn’t mean believing that everything will happen exactly as we want. It means understanding that even when life moves in unexpected directions, we can continue learning, adapting, and finding our way.
We don’t need to have every answer today.
Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is return to the present moment, accept what is within our control, and allow tomorrow to reveal itself when it arrives.
The Beauty of Continuing
There is something profoundly human about our ability to begin again.
We experience disappointment, uncertainty, loss, and change, yet life continues to offer opportunities for new understanding. The things that once occupied our entire world gradually become chapters in a much larger story.
Some experiences will always matter. Some memories may still hurt. Moving forward doesn’t necessarily mean forgetting what happened or becoming completely unaffected by it.
It means discovering that our lives can continue expanding beyond those experiences.
So when life becomes overwhelming, remember the moments you once believed you would never overcome. Remember the uncertainty you survived, the changes you adapted to, and the strength you developed without even realizing it.
You have already lived through days you thought would never end.
And although you cannot know exactly what tomorrow will bring, you can recognize one simple truth:
The moment you’re experiencing right now is not the entirety of your existence. It’s only one part of a life that is still unfolding.
Nothing lasts forever, and perhaps that’s not something we should fear.
Perhaps it’s one of life’s greatest gifts.
