Life is constantly moving. Nothing remains exactly as it is, no matter how much we wish to hold on to certain moments. Happiness comes and goes, challenges arise and eventually pass, and even the most difficult seasons of life give way to something new.
Within Hermetic philosophy, the Principle of Rhythm teaches that everything moves in cycles. As described in The Kybalion, life follows a continuous movement between opposing states, much like the rising and falling of ocean tides.
We experience this rhythm within ourselves. Some days, we feel motivated, peaceful, and connected to the world around us. Other days, we feel uncertain, disconnected, or overwhelmed. Rather than viewing these changes as personal failures, we can begin to recognize them as part of the natural movement of being human.
Much of our suffering comes from resisting this movement. We become attached to the good moments and desperately try to escape the uncomfortable ones. Yet, just as we cannot command the ocean to remain still, we cannot expect life to remain unchanged.
The wisdom of rhythm isn’t about controlling life’s cycles. It’s about learning how to move through them without losing ourselves.
Through awareness, patience, and acceptance, we begin to understand that not every difficult moment requires a solution. Sometimes, it simply requires our presence.
The next time life feels uncertain, remember that you are experiencing a moment, not a permanent condition.
The tides will continue to rise and fall. The seasons will continue to change.
And through it all, you can learn to find peace not by stopping the movement, but by becoming comfortable within it.
