The Spiritual Importance of Being Amazed by Ordinary Things

Somewhere along the way, we get used to being alive.

The sky becomes just the sky. Music becomes background noise. Trees become scenery. Even waking up each morning can feel so ordinary that we forget how strange and incredible it actually is to experience another day.

Maybe spirituality isn’t always about searching for something beyond everyday life. Maybe part of it is learning to notice what we’ve stopped noticing.

Think about how much is happening in an ordinary moment. Your heart is beating without being told. Light is traveling millions of miles before reaching your eyes. A song can somehow bring back a memory you haven’t thought about in years. You can look at another person and realize there is an entire inner world behind their eyes that you’ll never completely know.

None of this is really ordinary. We’ve simply become familiar with it.

Wonder brings us back into the present because it interrupts that familiarity. For a moment, we aren’t judging, planning, comparing, or trying to figure everything out. We’re simply paying attention.

You don’t have to travel somewhere sacred to experience that. Watch the clouds change shape. Listen closely to a piece of music. Look at the moon for longer than a few seconds. Notice the feeling of cold air when you step outside.

The world didn’t lose its mystery.

We just stopped looking at it like it was mysterious.
