The Past Can Knock, But You Don’t Have to Let It In

Sometimes the past returns without warning. A memory surfaces, an old feeling comes back, or something reminds you of a version of yourself you thought you had already left behind.

It’s easy to believe this means you haven’t healed. But healing doesn’t always mean forgetting. Sometimes healing is being able to remember without allowing the memory to control where you go next.

The past can knock on the door without being invited inside.

You can acknowledge what happened. You can feel the sadness, regret, anger, or whatever else comes with it. But you don’t have to unpack your bags and live there again.

There is a difference between remembering the past and returning to it.

When those old feelings appear, notice them without immediately fighting them. Take a breath. Remind yourself where you are now. Look at everything you’ve learned and how much has changed since then.

Some memories may always be part of you. That doesn’t mean they have to run your life.

Let the past knock.

Listen if there’s something left to learn.

Then gently return to the present.
