There’s a strange part of growth that nobody really prepares you for.
It’s the space where you no longer feel like the person you used to be, but you don’t completely recognize the person you’re becoming either.
Old habits start feeling uncomfortable. Certain conversations don’t interest you the way they once did. Things you used to chase lose their importance. You might even look back at an older version of yourself and wonder how you ever lived that way.
But the new version of you isn’t fully here yet.
And that space can feel incredibly uncertain.
We often imagine personal growth as a clear path forward. We think we’ll have a breakthrough, understand ourselves better, and suddenly everything will make sense. In reality, growth can feel more like walking through fog. You know you can’t go backward, but you can’t see very far ahead either.
That doesn’t necessarily mean you’re lost.
Sometimes it means you’re changing.
A seed doesn’t become a tree overnight. There is an entire process happening beneath the surface before anything new becomes visible. Human beings aren’t much different. Some of our biggest transformations happen quietly, long before we can explain what they’re turning us into.
This is why we shouldn’t rush to fill every uncertain period of life.
When we don’t know what comes next, our instinct is often to grab onto something familiar—a relationship, an old habit, a distraction, an identity, anything that makes us feel like ourselves again.
But sometimes the familiar is exactly what we’re outgrowing.
There is courage in allowing yourself to exist without immediately defining who you are becoming.
You can simply pay attention.
Notice what brings you peace now. Notice what drains you. Notice what you’re naturally moving toward and what you keep forcing yourself to hold onto. Notice which beliefs still feel true and which ones you’ve been carrying simply because they’ve been with you for years.
You don’t need to destroy your past self either.
That person got you here.
Every mistake, lesson, heartbreak, strange decision, beautiful moment, and difficult season became part of the road beneath your feet. Growth isn’t about hating who you were. It’s about being grateful for what that version of you taught you while recognizing when it’s time to keep moving.
Maybe you don’t need to know exactly who you’re becoming yet.
Maybe this chapter is simply about making room.
Let some things fall away. Let yourself change your mind. Let your priorities shift. Let there be unanswered questions.
There will eventually come a moment when you look around and realize that the unfamiliar life you were slowly walking toward has started to feel like home.
Until then, keep going.
The space between who you were and who you’re becoming isn’t empty.
It’s where the transformation is happening.
