There are periods in life when you no longer recognize the person you used to be, but you don’t quite know who you’re becoming either.
It’s a strange place to exist.
The habits, beliefs, relationships, or dreams that once defined you may no longer feel right. Yet whatever is supposed to replace them hasn’t fully appeared. You’re standing somewhere between an ending and a beginning.
We often treat this uncertainty like something is wrong. We want answers. We want direction. We want to know what the next chapter looks like before we’ve finished the current one.
But maybe the uncertainty is part of the transformation.
Think about how much of our identity is built from repetition. We tell ourselves stories about who we are, what we’re capable of, what we want, and where we belong. Eventually those stories become so familiar that we stop questioning them.
Growth interrupts that familiarity.
Suddenly, something you once wanted doesn’t matter as much. An old reaction doesn’t feel natural anymore. You begin questioning beliefs you’ve carried for years. You might even feel disconnected from a version of yourself that once seemed permanent.
That can feel like losing yourself.
But sometimes losing your old definition of yourself is exactly what creates room for something new.
The difficult part is resisting the urge to immediately fill that empty space.
We’re uncomfortable with not knowing, so we quickly search for another identity, another goal, another distraction, or another answer. Anything that gives us the feeling that we’re moving somewhere.
But there is value in simply being unfinished.
You don’t need to have yourself completely figured out. You don’t need to turn every realization into a five-year plan. Sometimes your responsibility is simply to pay attention.
Notice what feels different.
Notice what you’re naturally moving toward and what you’re beginning to leave behind.
Notice which parts of your life feel alive and which ones you’re maintaining only because they’re familiar.
Transformation isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it happens quietly, through hundreds of small decisions that slowly change the direction of your life.
One day, you look back and realize that the person you were searching for wasn’t waiting somewhere in the future.
You were becoming them the entire time.
So if you’re currently somewhere between who you were and who you’ll become, don’t rush through it.
There is nothing meaningless about the space between chapters.
Sometimes that uncertain space is exactly where the deepest growth is happening.
