A feeling can be real without the story we attach to it being true.
We feel anxious, and the mind says something must be wrong. We feel lonely, and suddenly we believe something is missing from our lives. We feel uncertain, and convince ourselves we’re falling behind.
The emotion happens first. Then the mind tries to explain it.
There’s nothing wrong with trying to understand what we feel, but not every emotion needs an immediate explanation. Sometimes sadness is simply sadness. Sometimes fear is a temporary wave. Sometimes we’re just tired, overwhelmed, or having a difficult day.
Mindfulness gives us a little space between the feeling and the story.
Instead of asking, “What does this mean about my life?” try asking, “What am I actually feeling right now?”
Notice it. Let it exist. Breathe with it without immediately trying to solve it.
Feelings change. Stories can keep them alive much longer.
You don’t have to believe every explanation your mind creates. Sometimes peace begins when you allow yourself to feel something without turning it into something more.
