We often talk about protecting our energy, but we don’t talk enough about protecting our attention.
Your attention might be one of the most valuable things you possess. Every day, countless things compete for it—social media, notifications, other people’s opinions, old memories, worries about the future, and situations completely outside your control.
And wherever your attention goes, a piece of your life follows.
Think about it. You can be sitting peacefully in your room, completely safe in the present moment, while your mind is somewhere else entirely—replaying something that happened months ago or imagining something that hasn’t even happened yet.
Your body is here.
But your attention isn’t.
This is part of what makes meditation so powerful. Meditation isn’t necessarily about making your mind completely silent. It’s about noticing where your attention wandered and gently bringing it back.
And maybe that’s something we can practice outside of meditation too.
Ask yourself: What am I spending my attention on every day?
Is it helping me grow? Is it bringing me peace? Is it connecting me with people I love? Or am I continuously giving my attention to things that leave me anxious, angry, jealous, or empty?
You don’t have unlimited attention.
So spend it intentionally.
Give some to creating. Give some to learning. Give some to people you love. Give some to nature. Give some to silence. And most importantly, save some for simply experiencing the strange, beautiful moment you’re currently alive inside of.
Because your life slowly begins to resemble whatever you continuously pay attention to.
