From the moment we enter the world, we are taught how to be.
We’re taught what’s right and wrong, what success looks like, how to act, how to feel, and who we should become. These lessons often come from well-meaning parents, teachers, friends, and society at large. But at some point, many of us begin to feel disconnected, stuck in identities that don’t quite fit. That discomfort isn’t a flaw—it’s a signal.
It’s a sign that it’s time to unlearn.
Who Told You Who You Are?
Take a moment to ask yourself: Who taught me how to define myself?
Maybe you were raised to believe that vulnerability is weakness. Or that your worth is tied to achievement. Or that you’re too loud, too sensitive, too much. These beliefs can shape how you see yourself, often becoming invisible limitations.
We internalize roles and labels early on. “The responsible one.” “The quiet one.” “The overachiever.” And then we build lives around these identities—sometimes without ever asking if they’re really ours.
Unlearning Is Self-Liberation
Unlearning isn’t forgetting. It’s remembering who you were before the world told you who to be.
It’s noticing the inner critic that says you’re not enough—and questioning where that voice came from. It’s identifying the habits and beliefs that don’t serve your growth anymore. And it’s realizing that you have permission to rewrite your story.
Unlearning isn’t easy. It requires awareness, honesty, and courage. But every step toward your authentic self is a step toward peace.
Reclaiming Your Truth
When you begin to unlearn, you stop living for approval and start living in alignment. You make decisions from your intuition instead of fear. You speak your truth instead of shrinking it. You no longer trade authenticity for acceptance.
Here are a few ways to begin:
- Reflect on the beliefs that keep you stuck and ask: Is this really mine?
- Practice saying “no” when something doesn’t feel true to you.
- Give yourself grace as you navigate the uncomfortable middle space between who you were and who you’re becoming.
You Were Never Meant to Stay Small
The real you is not too much. The real you is powerful, creative, complex, and ever-evolving.
Don’t be afraid to outgrow the version of you that was built to survive. You are allowed to thrive now. You are allowed to redefine everything. You are allowed to become.
Because unlearning who they taught you to be… is how you remember who you truly are.
